This Here Island (2025)
“In the high desert of Spain, the land doesn't just exist—it vibrates. It is a place of beautiful hostility, where the sun strips everything back to its barest, most honest form.”
The Arid Monologue: Spanning a significant 150 x 120 cm, this 3D linen canvas is an immersion into the stark, barren beauty of the Spanish interior. It is an exploration of "emptiness" as a powerful presence. By distilling the scorched earth and the haze of the desert into a series of rhythmic, horizontal strata, I have captured the essence of a landscape that feels like an island of heat, isolated from the rest of the world.
The Musical Cipher: The title This Here Island serves as a cryptic bridge to my "sonic diary." It is a direct link to a track or a fragmented lyric that provided the structural rhythm during the painting process. I invite the collector to look through these ochres and umbers for the auditory match; only when the music’s frequency aligns with the physical texture of the canvas is the full synergy of the Blinkered series unlocked.
Geological Texture: To translate the parched skin of the desert onto the canvas, I applied dozens of translucent and opaque glazes using unconventional DIY tools—sponges, rags, and raw friction. This creates a "kaleidoscopic" depth that mimics the shifting light on dry stone and dust. The 3D linen canvas gives the work a sculptural weight, making it a powerful, grounding anchor for a large-scale contemporary interior.
